While in dental school, Dr. Chunn performed biochemical research in the departments of Periodontics and Endodontics. In 1985 he received the prestigious student research fellowship grant awarded by the International Association for Dental Research. In 1986, that same award was granted to Dr. Chunn again; the first time that anyone had received the award twice.
He recalls: It seemed at the time that my professional life was going to take me into the laboratory to work on basic science research. I was surrounded by the best minds in dentistry and located in the best dental research institution in the world. But once I started treating patients daily, there was no way that I was going to be confined to the laboratory. I absolutely loved treating patients.
During his last year of dental school, Dr. Chunn was hired by Sea World of Texas so that he could pursue his other love, waterskiing. He completed his degree and began life skiing by day and practicing dentistry by night. Eventually the demands of his dental practice took priority and skiing became a weekend job.
By 1993 he had married, sold his practice in San Antonio and moved to Batesville, Arkansas. He and his wife Cindy have two daughters. When not in the office, Dr. Chunn spends his time on the lake, climbing mountains, or traveling. He spends over 40 hours each year pursuing continuing education courses and is a member of the following organizations:
